My Safe Florida Home Grant: A Palm Beach County Homeowner's Guide
A plain-English look at how the state program works and how it fits with an impact window project.
Start with the upgrade, then see if the grant helps
For most North County homeowners, the reasons to upgrade are storm protection and possible insurance savings. The grant is a bonus that may cover part of the cost if you qualify.
What the program offers
My Safe Florida Home starts with a free wind mitigation inspection. If the inspector recommends eligible improvements, such as impact windows, impact doors, garage doors or roof-to-wall upgrades, you may qualify for up to $10,000 in matching funds. Only improvements recommended in your inspection report are eligible.
Who's eligible (key points)
- Homestead: the home must be your homesteaded primary residence.
- Home value: the home's insured value must be $700,000 or less.
- Other requirements apply, including construction date and insurance status. Check the current rules at mysafeflhome.com.
How the process works
- Apply online at mysafeflhome.com. Funding is limited and generally first come, first served.
- The state assigns your inspector. You don't pick the inspector; the program assigns one.
- Review your report. It lists the recommended, grant-eligible improvements.
- Get bids. You can hire any licensed contractor you choose. The state recommends getting 3 bids.
- Get approved before work starts. Do not start or sign for work until your grant is approved, or the work may not qualify.
- Finish within 18 months. Approved projects must be completed within the program's 18-month window, followed by a final inspection.
- Reimbursement is paid according to program rules after the work is verified.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting work before approval
- Installing items that weren't in your inspection report
- Waiting until peak storm season, when installers book up
How we can help
We don't process grants and aren't part of the program. Once you have your inspection report, we can connect you with independent, licensed local contractors so you can collect the bids the state recommends.
